Today we did a sprinkler repair in Norman.  The sprinkler system needed a checkup.  We went through each sprinkler zone and identified several different problems.  Zone 2 had a cracked sprinkler pipe in a flower bed.  Zone 4 had a broken sprinkler rotor on the edge of the driveway that had been driven over and broken.  Zone 6 and 7 each had a couple of pop-up spray heads that were worn out and would not pop-up.  The diagnosis and the repair took less than two hours.  Now their  sprinkler system is running great!

Tomorrow, we are going to Edmond to install a French Drain.

Hopefully 2012 wont be as hot as 2011.  Record heat for Central Oklahoma caused the death of trees, shrubs, and grass all over the state.  A new Lawn Irrigation System installed by CMG can help solve these problems. Sprinkler Systems distribute water much faster and more efficiently than dragging hoses around all day to water your yard.

Our Sprinkler Systems are Self-Draing.   The Sprinkler Pipes Drain underground when the Irrigation System is turned off.   Nothing needs to be done to prepare your Irrigation System for winter except turn it off.  There is no water left in the Sprinkler Pipes to Freeze when it gets cold in the winter.

IN-LINE SPRINKLER PIPE DRAIN

rain freeze sensor

For Central Oklahoma Residents who already have a Sprinkler System, I recommend a RAIN/FREEZE SENSOR.  This is a great way to ensure that the sprinkler systemgets turned off when there is no one available to turn it off.  If you are away on vacation for example, the RAIN/FREEZE SENSOR will turn off the sprinkler system after a heavy thunderstorm when it is too wet to water.  The RAIN/FREEZE SENSOR will turn the sprinkler system back on when it is dry enough to water again.  It will do the same thing for your sprinkler systemif it gets too cold or starts to snow.

Just what is a “French Drain?”  Many times people incorrectly use the phrase, “French Drain,”  to apply to many different types of Drains that could be used in a Drainage System.  The term is widely used and many times incorrectly connected to “Surface Drains,” or “Channel Drains.”

A Surface Drain has a grate that sits on top of a basin.  The basin is underground.  A Drain Pipe is connected underground to an outlet on the Drain Basin. Storm-Water Drains through the grate into the Drain Basin.  Once in the Drain Basin, water travels out of the basin through a Drain Pipe.  The Storm-Water continues downhill in an underground Drain Pipe to an exit point.

WHAT YOU SEE BELOW IS NOT A FRENCH DRAIN!

A Surface Drain may come in many different shapes or sizes.  The Drain Grate may be round or square.  Here is a picture of a common Surface Drain.

A Channel Drain is a type of Surface Drain and many times is installed in concrete across sidewalks or driveways.

A French Drain is completely different from a Surface Drain.  A basic French Drain consists of a Perforated Drain Pipe in the bottom of a trench.  The Drain Pipe should have a neoprene sock around the Perforated Drain Pipe.   This is to ensure that the Drain Pipe does not become clogged.

The dirt that was taken out to make the trench is hauled away.  It is replaced by some type of small stone or gravel depending on what is desired or available.  I prefer crushed 1 inch lime stone.  It is the most economical option in my area.  Pea Gravel or some other type of small stone can work just as well.    The lime-stone or gravel is placed in the trench on top of the perforated Drain Pipe and filled all the way to the surface (ground level).   In some cases where the French Drain needs to be deep or is being placed in sandy soil, a special trench liner must be placed in the trench before the perforated Drain Pipe or the Gravel are installed.  This helps maintain the integrity of the trench over time.  It also increases the cost of the French Drain and the amount of time to install it.  I install a trench liner in a French Drain about 20% of the time.  Most of the time a liner in not needed.

French Drain March 2011
A French Drain is designed to handle a large volume of water and cover a large area. The Drain is anyplace the trench goes. It has many applications and can be used in many situations.  It can be installed by itself or incorporated into a Drainage System with Surface Drains or Gutter Down-Spouts connected to it.
The main downfall of a French Drain is that they, for the most part aren’t very pretty.  They don’t look very nice in a yard once they are completed.
Depending on the area the French Drain is installed and the type of grass around the French Drain, will dictate whether grass grows over the lime stone.  Grass can grow up and through the gravel in the French Drain over time eventually covering the gravel.  This is Ok.  It won’t have a measurable effect on the performance of the drain.
DONT COVER THE GRAVEL IN THE FRENCH DRAIN WITH DIRT.  THE FRENCH DRAIN WON’T WORK IF THE TRENCH IS CLOGGED WITH DIRT.  DON’T EVEN INSTALL IT IF YOU ARE GOING TO COVER IT UP WITH DIRT.
DECORATIVE STONE CAN BE USED TO COVER A FRENCH DRAIN AND THEY LOOK GREAT AND LAST A LIFETIME.

2012 has started quickly for CMG.   The end of warm winter has jump started our business.  Recently we have installed two French Drains in a gated community in NW Oklahoma City, a Sprinkler System South of Danforth in Edmond and a Sprinkler System in East Norman by Lake Thunderbird.

IN-LINE SPRINKLER PIPE DRAIN

Sprinkler Repair is also very popular this time of year.  Folks in Central Oklahoma are turning on their Sprinkler Systems and discovering problems.  CMG Sprinkler Repair Specialist have been busy.  We fixed several leaks in a Sprinkler System in Edmond.  The sprinkler pipes were leaking in several places.  Each leak had to be cut out and replaced.  The Sprinkler System was fairly new.  It was installed last summer by a Pool Company that also installs cheap sprinkler systems. All the joints in the sprinkler pipes were glued together with clear PVC Cement.  That part is OK, But they cut some corners and didn’t use PVC Primer with the glue.  As a result the joints didn’t bond very well and many of them blew apart this spring when the sprinkler systems was turned on.  (Thus all the leaks)  I suspect we will have to go back several times to fix additional leaks.  We can only warranty the PVC joints that we have replaced.   Cheaper isn’t always better.

Now is a great time to consider a new Lawn Sprinkler Irrigation System by CMG. CMG Sprinklers and Drains installs top of the line Sprinkler Systems that are dependabled and last for decades.  Yes, I said decades!  We warrenty our sprinklers for two years,  but we build them to last much longer.  We started small in Norman in 1993.  The sprinkler systems installed that year, to my knowledge are functional and going strong.

From time to time CMG Service Experts must work on a sprinkler system that we installed.  Usually it is for reasons beyond our control like, “lightning burning up a sprinkler controller” or,  “a customer running over a sprinkler head with their car.”

CMG designed sprinkler systems are fully automatic and self-draining.  When the sprinklers are not running, the system automatically drains the sprinkler pipesunder ground.  If it gets cold there is no water in the sprinkler pipesto freeze.

My name is Blane Callen. I have owned and operated CMG Sprinklers and Drains since 1993.  I take great pride in my work.  The Letters “CMG” stand for the first letter of the first name of each of my children.  ( Chance, Melissa, Garrett )  = CMG

I have amassed a great deal of experience designing and installing sprinkler systemsrepairing sprinkler systems, and designing and installing drainage systems.  Like all things in life, I have made mistakes, but I have learned from them.  As a result I get calls from time to time from other sprinkler system and drainage companies that have run into a problem that they can’t handle.  I am always glad to help.

I usually don’t take money up front for Sprinkler Installation, Sprinkler Repair, or Drain Installation.  I prefer that the customer pay me when the job is complete and they are happy with the work.  In a few cases on very large jobs I request a draw or outlay for parts.  The parts are delivered from my supplier to the address where the job is being done and equal the amount of the draw.  The parts stay on the premises until they are installed.

Wow, we have a new twist on sprinkler repair.  Broken sprinkler pipes occur for all kinds of reasons. Sprinkler Pipes break because:  1.  They freeze (usually due to poor installation)  2.  Cars or trucks drive up in yards and break them.  3.  They blow apart under pressure (usually because primer was not used when the pipes were glued together).

This year we have had a lot of calls to fix leaking or broken sprinkler pipes due to Earth Quake Damage.  I would expect that in California, but Oklahoma?  Since 1993 CMG has fixed sprinkler systems for all kinds of reasons.  Earthquake damage is something new.
